Coffee, Corduroy & Morning Fog

November 7, 2011, Washington, DC: This morning I am thankful for earlier daylight. I am grateful for a home that smells of coffee and is textured like corduroy. I am appreciative of apple cinnamon oatmeal and morning radio, and a to-go mug and a seat warmer and no need to dress up and this fog… The fog lifting around RFK stadium on my way out of town is rising fast. Backlit by the sun, the stadium is seen in silhouette from here in front of the city’s National Guard headquarters. The fog is still socked in tight over the Anacostia River just beyond.

I leave town this way in the mornings to avoid a more cluttered but direct route that used to agitate me from the start. Now a slow drive around Lincoln Park and out East Capitol past the Car Barn and Eastern Senior High School allows me to descend into the day. This way out of town shows off the bright side of life on this eastern edge of Capitol Hill. This morning -- driving through pockets of fog and popping back out under a clear crisp sky -- it’s reminiscent of San Francisco.
